| Motorhome users enjoy all the luxuries on the road! We recently sold our motor home and bought a 30ft travel trailer. We realized this was not a well thought out move when we ended up 2000 miles from home in the deserts of Arizona on a 125 degree day in July with no power. Normally, when traveling, we would take frequent breaks in our old motor home, of course with all the luxuries of home including air conditioning, coffee pot and microwave. We would fire up our generator and aside from the noise, all was good.
When we returned home, we decided that some type of power was necessary when traveling, not just in the campgrounds. I started researching all different ways of acquiring stand alone power. My research led me to an AIMS 5000 watt inverter powered by bank of 8 6 volt 250 amp hour batteries and charging the batteries with 2 45 amp dual channel 3 stage battery chargers. I installed an automatic x-fer switch and hardwired all the wiring. If shore power is available the x-fer switch defaults that way. Otherwise, the inverter takes over.
A remote switch mounted in the pulling vehicle turns on the inverter, that way 10 or 15 minutes before we stop the inverter can be turned on to start cooling the camper prior to us stopping. The inverter is a modified sine wave so I do get a little hum from the microwave. The inverter has outstanding starting abilities and runs everything in my camper with little effort. With the air running constantly, I can run in island mode for about 24 hours before I need to recharge. Under normal usage, I have run a week on island mode and still had power left. Total cost was around $1600.00, about the cost a nice portable generator, the only things I didn't get was the noise and a fuel bill. I am now considering the same setup for my house. Will be buying from Inverters R Us again.
