| Mail Order Company Able to Stay Up & Running! I use two inverters a 300 watt and a 400 watt along with my generator for power failures. In between generator runs, I power the TV, compact florescent lights, and aquarium pumps with one inverter and the furnace, if needed with the second. This greatly reduces the fuel used and will let me go for days since the refrigerator and freezer are the appliances that require the generator and while running these, I recharge my two 115 amp hour batteries. My furnace has a variable speed blower that when run on low heating stage only requires about 300 watts and with it's DC motor and ramp up feature does not overload the inverter. Works great, and really helps me stretch the fuel.
When rustic camping, I take along my 140 watt unit and run a small fan and a few 13 watt compact florescent lamps around the campsite. Works much better than a gas lantern, and is safer, cooler and cheaper to run. Many fellow campers have commented on how great it works, and we can actually see while playing cards.
Several years ago I worked for a mail order computer parts company. A semi-trailer knocked down a power pole on the corner knocking out power to the area. We knew we would be powerless for quite a while and we couldn't use our phones. This business advertised in computer magazines nationwide and were loosing many sales per hour. I remembered my power inverter and extension cords were still in my trunk after a camping trip, and sure enough, it did get our small phone system running off my car battery and were able to finish out the day. By the next afternoon the owner had ordered a UPS system, but that inverter sure saved us from a lot of lost business. I now leave my 140 watt inverter and extension cord in my trunk always, you never know when it will come in handy.
Last night we had one of the worst thunder storms I can remember. A storm last year took out my computer and a small TV, and my insurance rates went up because I made a claim. This time I turned off the main breakers and used the inverter for lights and a fan until the storm passed. I may or may not have saved many more dollars by closing the path into the house, but it sure made me feel better about all that lightning.
